i am me because of you

When I step back

“Stand aside for a while and leave room for learning, observe carefully what children do, and then, if you have understood well, perhaps teaching will be different from before.”
Loris Malaguzzi

The above quote talks about stepping back and letting learning just happen. Today it happened very naturally. I was a little late back to class and when I arrived this is what I walked into. Watch the video. Everyone was doing something different. Some were working on their inquiry, others were reading, some were doing doubling facts for maths. This is evidence and a sign that you are becoming an independent learner. This is what I am hoping for and looking for in you as people and as learners. To be able to just get on with it, without an adult telling you or watching over you.

I would like to step back a lot more and only step in when I really have to.

  1. I think stepping back would be a good idea because it is a chance for us to become more independent.

  2. I think stepping back would be a great idea because when you step back, you are letting us show our different ways and perspectives of learning. Then you can teach us differently with ease. A good example, coming from a kids movie, Kung Fu Panda, is when Mater Shifu taught Po with great difficulty. Then when Shifu stepped back, he found out how to teach Po (by using food), Po became a great learner. That’s the same for us; we will become independent learners if Mr Chad steps back.

I think it’s good that Mr. Chad stepped back because when Mr. Chad steps back we can all know how each other are and just be ourselves and show our true colours and how we are when it comes to learning so we can prove to Mr. Chad who we really are when learning.

  4. Mr. Chad it was good you stepped back when we were getting on with it, it makes us become more wise, independent and responsible.

  5. I think stepping up is good, Because it is good to look back, and it is the same as doing a review to look back.

  6. i did my work and i am proud of myself and all of you my class mates.

  7. thank you for stepping back good idea

  8. oh and sir E for evidence

Mr. Chad should step back more often. He trusted us to get on with it, and we passed. I noticed people recording in their bubble catcher, planning their inquiry and people reading. We are starting to step up!

Yeah, we are stepping up. I think this should be more often. It made me feel like a flyer. The true flyers are the ones who don’t need adults behind them every time. All of us were flyers today. We need this. We need to be on our own. It helps us more.

  11. I think it was a good idea for mr chad to step back and not ask us to get our umercy books in boring mode becuse all the peacful energy could have been destroyed and ppeple wold go crazy.

  12. I loved it when you stepped back because it shows you have made your students become confident and independant learners and not all teachers would instill that in their students.Hats off Mr.Chad.And I promise we would do you proud if you believed in us.

    • I really like that you used the word ‘instill,’ Ruby! I do believe in you, that’s why I stepped back and let you guys just get on with it. Really proud. I am loving your enthusiasm for learning too by the way!

It was great that Mr Chad stepped back because we could show him a sign of becoming independent learners. During that time I was reading a book and after reading I planned how my summative assessment would be.

  14. Mr chad it was great you didn’t go all teacher mode because of that it was perfect I got more information thanks. 😉

  15. It was a nice idea Mr Chad stepped back so now we can show him we are independent.
