This is Dhrishti’s piece….

What understandings will be developed?

Students will understand that…
people consume (eat, use, buy) different amounts of resources that affect the environment. (Consumer)

People use different amounts of electricity. I found out that the residential program at school charges 18.50 KSH per unit. This is actually higher than what it costs where I live. It is only 15.50 KSH per unit. How can this be the case when both places are in the same city? If people used similar amounts of electricity throughout the world then it would be a fairer distribution. This will never happen as countries use different was to convert and use energy. What we use and what we need are very different. I found a photo of what the world looks like at night from a satellite image. It shows the major cities giving off light. It is very clear to see the countries and cities that consume different amounts of energy to power things. I realized that the higher population means that more people need to use energy. I also found out that cities like Hong Kong are charging lower rates of electricity than Kenya. I found this really hard to understand. I know that Hong Kong is well developed but, “How can a city with 8 million people be a cheaper place to live than a city of 1 million? This helped me understand that we all consume at different rates depending on the demand. If people could use only what they needed then we would be able to reduce the impact on natural resources, which in turn promotes a healthier environment.

Students will understand that…
people make different choices about what they consume and this shows in the environment. (Pollution)

What I think is is acceptable to use and consume is very different to the next person in the same city and even more so from someone else in another country. We all have the power to control the amount of electricity that we need. It is how we think of more effective ways to use what we need to reduce the impact we have on the environment. There is evidence that shows there is a hole in the ozone layer due to air pollution of coal. This allows radiation from the sun to penetrate the atmosphere, which heats up the Earth’s temperature. This is evidence that using coal as dirty energy depletes the natural systems which are there to ensure balance and conservation are at tolerable levels which the earth can manage naturally. Some radiation and air pollution is released out to space. Unfortunately, not all of this can leave the Earth’s atmosphere fast enough. The earth is showing more and more signs that the choices people make are having a negative impact, which is heading to a point that may prove to be irreversible.

Students will understand that…
making informed decisions and taking action can result in changing the environment for a better future. (Conservation)

I have made some better choices to think of how I can do my part in the bigger picture. And there is a bigger picture. I have been learning that things start with me and that I can influence the impact I have if I too accept responsibility. My actions may also reach other people. By reducing the electricity bill in my house, it has saved money. This is something that my dad and I can measure as success, making a difference. We also understand that we need to make this a permanent change too. Unless, everything we talked about didn’t mean anything. I want a better future. We cannot live with the attitude that it is not up to me, that I am only one person. If we all think like this then it will never change. I have a preferable future that I want to live in. I still have questions about the things I have been learning. “What will it take for people to understand that they also need to adopt some changes in their life and accept responsibility?” We have created this world. We have taken and continue to take as much as we can through the advancement of technology and science. It is easier to dig deeper and go to places which have been inaccessible for many years. We use nuclear power as a cleaner way to produce electricity but have also learnt through the Earthquake in Japan in 2010 what can happen if the radiation is released into the air. While governments are ultimately responsible for making big decisions, it mostly lies with the people. This means you and I. This means it is use that can have the widest impact in determining the future we want with the environment in mind. This unit has allowed me and empowered me to make better decisions about taking action and seeing the change that I have caused as a result of doing something meaningful. “The question still remains, what else can I do to reduce the things that I use, eat and buy?”

This is Jonathan’s piece…

Students will understand that…
people consume (eat, use, buy) different amounts of resources that affect the environment. (Consumer)
In California 16 billion plastic bags end up in the Pacific Ocean. In Australia 2 billion plastic bags end up in the Pacific Ocean. This got me thinking about why it is like this. I know that the population is very different between the two countries. They may have different recycling systems too. People also might be more environmentally conscious too. What we do, the small acts that people take will drastically impact the effect on the nature and the environment. Some countries like Rwanda have taken drastic measure to ban plastic bags. It is also up to bold and forward-thinking governments around the world to make laws that ban the use of plastic bags. This would reduce the damage on the environment.

Students will understand that…
people make different choices about what they consume and this shows in the environment. (Pollution)
It takes 100’s of years for a plastic bag to break down. Plastic bags are not biodegradable. This means they do not naturally decompose. People all over the world consume plastic bags at different rates. Some shops have their own bags to promote a better choice. The problem is that very few people go for this option. There are signs all over the world that show the damage plastic bags have on the environment. Most end up in land fill or the ocean.

Students will understand that…
making informed decisions and taking action can result in changing the environment for a better future. (Conservation)
I have asked my family and friends to use cloth bags instead of plastic bags. It requires more planning and organization, but once this becomes a habit it is really easy to do. My mum now uses a cloth bag which can be used over and over again for many years. Just by doing this alone we are saving around 20 plastic bags per week. Over a year this is 1040 plastic bags a year that we are not using by taking action. If my 10 other families I know did this too then it would be over 10,000 plastic bags saved. Doing this is making a better future. It is my contribution. I know it will be challenging to maintain this change in my life. I need to make this choice sustainable.

I really can see that Jonathan is stepping up. He has done much better in this unit than others. Keep it up!

On the other hand Dhrishti has done very well to. I think she has a good understanding of electricity.

I agree with you Saloni. Jonathan has really improved. It is quite impressive. But he still holds his record of sir helping him in every unit greatly. Also Dish has done well. She does seem to have a good understanding of electricity.

  2. I really like how the two of them (Jonathan and Dish) put their piece of writing. These pieces of writing will really help into making a blog post for my blog. I think that they did a great job at it with a little help from Mr.Chad.

    • I agree with you. They really did do a good job with help by Mr. Chad. But I don’t believe that Jonathan could write all of that when he is usually surrounded by pigeons. He needed that help and encouragement by sir for him to actually do something that nails it.

  3. I think Jonathan has stepped up in this unit the most and now he has a deeper understanding of how plastic bags impact the environment and what happens to them.

I also think Dish has also stepped up much more and has a better idea of electricity and how it impacts the environment.

  4. I agree with Saloni. Jonathan is stepping up. He did well!. Also Dhrishti is stepping up. I noticed that she researched many information. Jonathan and Dhrishti’s sentences is a thoughtful and detailed. Dhrishti and Jonathan has a many knowledge about the there unit.

    • I notice that you have observed their work carefully. I just scanned through. That is good. If you do this more, you will start to become a great reader. Also you understand. That counts a lot. Great comment, not good. 🙂

  5. Johnathan and Dhrishti have stepped up, especially Johnathan. He is going like me. He and I have both had MAJOR shifts between Units 1 and 4. They have done the work thoroughly. They have the knowledge in their heads.

  6. Johnathan and Dhrishti have stepped up, especially Johnathan. He is going like me. He and I have both had MAJOR shifts between Units 1 and 4. They have done their research thoroughly. They have the knowledge in their heads. Well done, Johnathan and Dhrishti! You’ve stepped up!

  8. Jonathan’s work was shocking, Drishti was not so surprising ,because she is always flying, I am ready for tomorrow because I know I have researched a lot and the information has become knowledge. By the way Jonathan good job we want MORE.

  9. Congratulations to Drishti and Jonathan for stepping up.Thanks to Mr.Chad for holding their hand to stepping up and never giving up.Please keep the ball rolling till exhibition time.

  10. Jonathan’s work was shocking cause he has never written with that much vocabulary and that detailed cause every time he writes a story it not that detail and informing but good for you Jonathan 😎

  11. Well I do no alot more about electricity now.I am ready for my picture tomorrow.
I think i have steped up alot but still need to go higher and higher like an EAGLE.
