Being mindful about the skills we use
Today we looked at the skills you are not sure about, the ones that you don’t know the meaning to. You also looked at the skills you have used so far in the Exhibition and how they have helped you to do things.
Look closely at the below list and meanings. Which 3 skills will you:
- Use the most?
- Help you the most?
State why and how these skills will help you do the things that you need to do.
SOCIAL SKILLS
Accepting responsibility: Taking on a challenge and completing it on time
Respecting others: Being kind and friendly and listen to other people’s ideas
Cooperating: When working in a group, we have to work together, to have manners and share ideas
Resolving Conflict: Solving problems together, listening to others. To be fair to each other
Group decision-making: Communicate with others, and listen to other’s ideas
Adopting a variety of group roles: To behave well at all times, a leader in some cases, and a follower in others.
THINKING SKILLS
Acquisition of knowledge: Learning facts, ideas and being able to understand things
Comprehension: Learning something and understand what it means
Application: Using the knowledge that we already have
Analysis: Deconstructing knowledge or ideas
Synthesis: To join together to form one whole or something new by creating
Evaluation: Deciding how good it is (Assessing)
Dialectical thought: Thinking about others’ perspectives, point of view and understanding
Metacognition: Think about how you think and how you learn
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Listening: Listening to directions. Listening to others. Listening to information
Speaking: Speaking clearly to different sized groups
Reading: Reading lots of different types of things for information and fun
Writing: Collecting information, taking notes and taking what you need
Viewing: Seeing things differently, looking at images and text. Making right choices at viewing things
Presenting: Communicating information and ideas through a variety of visual media. Using appropriate technology for an effective presentation and representation of understanding
Non-verbal communication: Recognizing the meaning of visual and body movement/language
RESEARCH SKILLS
Formulating questions: Making relevant questions that we can find out about
Observing: Being able to watch what is happening
Planning: Being able to find out necessary information. Organising the steps in order to do work
Collecting data: Finding and gathering all the information we need
Recording data: Taking notes, making charts to understand and remember our work
Organising data: To organize the data in place so we can read it and understand it easily
Interpreting data: Translating and making conclusions from organized data
Presenting research findings: Communicating and showing what you have been finding out
SELF MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Gross motor skills: Using big muscles and a lot of strength
Fine motor skills: Using small muscles and limited strength
Spatial awareness: Being aware of things around you
Organisation: Planning and doing things in order and on time
Time management: Managing time well
Safety: Being safe and caring for others well being
Healthy lifestyle: To be able to take care of yourself and having a balanced lifestyle
Codes of behaviour: To behave at the right time in the right place
Informed choices: Choosing good actions in the appropriate situations
